HCS x FAZE MAJOR COMING TO CHARLOTTE
FaZe has announced it will host the fourth HCS LAN event of the season later this year in Charlotte, North Carolina. Halo competitors from around the world will descend on the city to battle for a share of the $250,000 prize pool, as well as critical points and seeding for the Halo World Championship in Seattle shortly after. The event is scheduled for October 3–5, giving fans and players plenty of time to prepare—whether you're planning to spectate or compete. You can learn more about the event details and grab tickets here.
THE FIX 🎬
Charlotte is set to host its second HCS Major LAN in as many years, marking the third Halo Infinite-era LAN held in North Carolina (2021–2025). While these events don’t yet fill entire convention centers or stadiums, they still offer a meaningful opportunity for local cities to host impactful esports experiences at scale.
These events create space for local organizers, players, and fans to come together, and provide scholastic leaders a chance to observe how professional esports events operate. We encourage members of the local community to engage—whether attending in person or tuning in online—to not only learn more about LAN events, but also to demonstrate that there is strong regional support for competitive gaming.
With North Carolina’s government-backed esports incentives in full effect, organizers are bringing more events to the region than ever before. Have the incentives paid off for North Carolina? From the optics of visibility and awareness, and the amount of newly hosted events in the state, the short answer is obviously yes. From a fiscal lens, it’s hard to say. Economic impact of these events are a great indicator of their standalone success, but legislators will also need to compare the success of esports events as a whole versus the success of investments in other industries.
MICROSOFT LAYOFFS HIT XBOX HARD
Microsoft announced a mass layoff of approximately 9,000 employees—about 4% of its workforce—on July 2, 2025, significantly impacting its gaming properties. Xbox took a massive hit with layoffs at studios like King, ZeniMax, and Rare, which prompted the cancellation of high-profile titles such as Perfect Dark and Everwild, along with the cancellation of what seemed to be an internally highly anticipated unannounced MMO being developed by ZeniMax. The business cited that it will be pivoting toward streamlining operations and AI/cloud-focused growth going forward as the primary driver for the layoffs.
THE FIX 🎬
The gaming landscape is of course ever-changing and businesses like Microsoft are always on the bleeding edge of innovation looking for what’s next. While gaming remains an important pillar for the company, it’s increasingly being overshadowed by the rapid expansion of AI and cloud-based technologies, where Microsoft continues to lead.
We are of course disheartened by the impact these layoffs have had, particularly on individuals within our communities. The entire gaming industry has felt the ripple effects of post-COVID course corrections, with many of today’s layoffs tied to decisions made during that unprecedented growth period.
For Microsoft, Xbox Game Pass remains a bold, if uncertain, bet—one Microsoft still seems committed to. And while the future of the service and broader Xbox strategy remains unclear, recent wins and announcements from the Xbox Showcase offer hope. For now, we are watching closely and rooting for a stable, sustainable path forward for all of gaming—but as always, only time will tell.
